Course Description

Organizations have implemented a variety of approaches and management techniques in the quest of operational excellence and continuous development. The Gemba walk is one such effective technique with roots in the Lean management concept. Gemba walks, which are sometimes seen as the foundation of Lean, go well beyond simple process observation. They represent a profound commitment to understanding, appreciating, and empowering the workforce. We will go into the idea of Gemba walks in this course, examine their importance, and comprehend how they contribute to organizational success.

The term “Gemba” originates from Japanese and translates to “the real place.” In a business context, Gemba refers to the actual location where work is performed and value is created for customers. This could be a manufacturing shop floor, a service center, a hospital ward, a construction site, a retail store, or any other workplace where daily operations occur.

During a Gemba walk, managers, leaders, or executives travel directly to the work area to watch processes, interact with employees, and gain an understanding of how operations are actually carried out. Gemba walks are encouraged instead of conventional management techniques, which frequently rely on reports and meetings. They provide a special chance to leave the walls of offices and boardrooms and become fully immersed in the action.
